Marjane Satrapi (Persepolis) will direct a live-action adaptation of Radioactive: Marie and Pierre Curie: A Tale of Love and Fallout. Artist and journalist Lauren Redniss combines research and her striking art in this illustrated biography of Nobel Prize winner Marie Curie. Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) will portray Curie in what the producers call less of a traditional biopic and more of a “fairy-tale” life story about her loves and her scientific discoveries.
“This is not a biopic, but a love story,” said StudioCanal chairman-CEO Didier Lupfer, “set at a tremendous time of change, capturing a woman who is amazing, brilliant and quite charming, and the only woman of the time capable of being accepted by the scientific establishment.”
“Marie Curie was such a natural force of life. everybody, everywhere she went was effected by her energy and brilliance,” Satrapi said in a press release. “This is an intense role which require a lot of intelligence and sensibility. Rosamund is ‘the one’ to play her. I understood it the second I met her.” No doubt Pike’s unforgettable turn as Amy Dunne in Gone Girl helped with that.
Ron Halpern, StudioCanal EVP, seconded the sentiment: “Rosamund speaks about the subject and character in such an intelligent way and is fascinated by the character and time. For this role, we needed a strong woman like Rosamund who could convey the intelligence, determination and courage of Marie Curie. With Marjane they make a powerful duo of women.”
Satrapi, of course, is best known for her landmark graphic novel Persepolis, as well as adapting the big-screen animated feature adaptation. It will be fascinating to see how she translates the striking visuals from Redniss’ book. Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) will adapt Redniss’ book for the big screen. This sounds like it has the potential to be an incredible collaboration.
